This was the first Dead show I ever got into, but not for long. For an undercover cop took offense at the American flag that I was wearing as a cape. While saying “I fought for that flag!” He chased me down, snatched the flag off of me and pushed me out the doors into the dirty remnants of the cold rain and snow while I he band played Cold Rain and Snow. The irony was not lost in me as I listened through the glass doors. It’s great to be able to hear my ‘first’ show from a different perspective, all the hear shows and years later.

Your honor, may I present more evidence that proves the best AUD is usually better than the best SBD. This one is sweet! And by the way this show rocks, the boys typically delivered scorchers in Philly. The Shakedown Lost Sailor Saint Terrapin is the REAL DEAL - just incredible. My first show in Philly didn’t come until the next year, and little did I know then that I’d live in Philly for 10 years later in life. Sure miss the grit, spirit and roasted pork sandwiches (with sharp provolone and hot peppers) of this top city!

Maybe I'm the one who was too high , but I swear the snow was the night before ,coming out of the Spectrum on 4/5 and having 3 or 4 inches on the ground & hence the next night 4/6 opener "Cold, Rain, & Snow",either way this show had me ( on the bus), skipping a week of high school to tour, definitely a great show of the Brent generation

The taper did a great job and captured rich, full sound without too much crowd noise. Nice 2nd set....well played.

Liked this show.. Good effort by the Ger Bear..Saw most of my shows in the Spectrum. Some real good numbers on some nights. Some flat ones.. After'85-86. Not so good.Cold Rain was a great open! Saratoga Springs was my favorite E. Coast venue. Love these archives, really nice to look back. Onward... Rochester, NY 9.2.80!!

One of my all time keepers! Packed a microbus full of buddies from Westchester NY and got snowed into the parking lot. Had a keg of beer and lots of acid hehe. I remember us all cramped in the bus as the whole universe turned white and all the cars in the parking lot turned into miniature versions of themselves... Cold Rain opener, great first set of classics and to this day my favorite Shakedown 2nd set opener. After Shakedown I had to ask my buddy to lift me off my chair and onto the floor because it looked like I was 500 ft in the air and I thought I'd hurt myself. What a weekend!

Yesterday I wrote about cut tunes, but it would seem it's my equipment that has a glitch. The good news is that I keep listening and burning from both sources to find the perfect mix to recreate that night just right. Back to work!

I remember taking the Amtrak train down to Philly with about 20 other dead heads due to the Storm that rolled in. Very vivid memory of being in the amtrak bathroom doing bong hits with 15 other people and hearing knocking on the door and brushing it off until the conductor came and made us get out. Well we opened the door and the smoke billowed out there were 10 business men waiting to get in. Great times great show. Well worth the trip.....................

Haven't listened to the recording yet, but I can still remember being there and its only been 25 years. The weather was lousy, coming from New York City in a sleet storm. It still ranks in my top ten shows out of 249 that I had seen.

and i prefer soundboards. so i can see how someone might not be able to get on board with the quality here. that being said, besides being a tad "low" i think this is an excellent recording. and the show? well at moments this one was brilliant. shakedown through terrapin, and then morning dew (which was still somewhat rare at this time) all very nice. well worth having. thanks! 4 for sound, 4.45 for show

For me, the CR&S opener was an ominous foreboding of what was to occur later that night.... We had seats on the floor that night, and spent a good portion of the show precariously dancing on our chairs. As the last ring of Baby Blue slowly faded from our ears and we turned to depart, I discovered that someone had taken my coat from the back of my chair... BUMMER!!!
As others have mentioned, we had that early spring snowstorm that night, and on the long PT ride home I kept blurting out "run me...OUT IN THE COLD RAIN AND SNOW!!" until someone finally yelled "SHUT THE #*&% UP!!"
I can only assume that the person who took my coat really needed it. I just hope they were kind, and I like to think that they went on to perform ten good deeds in turn. Anyways, my memory of that night has always been the bad ending... until now. Getting to hear this show again reminded me what a great time I had before that! Thanks so much to everyone who is deadicated to preserving this legacy.
P.S. 4 stars for the coat thing - forgive and remember, I guess.

That's for sure. This night was cold and snowy. Wam as hell inside though. This old barn (the spectrum) really had it's moments over the years. This night was one of them. I am partial to good audience recordings...but this shakedown SBD is better then this recording. I recommend excessive volume!

Might as well review this one on the 24th anniversary of my first GD concert.
I will give this show 5 stars based on 1.) The performance - the band was just ON this night. The interplay between Brent & Jerry on Shakedown shows they were listening to each other. The songs are tight and focused. 2.) This audience tape sounds very good. Much better than the SBD available here.
3.) It was my first show and I had one hell of a GREAT time. Might as well, might as well....

Check out The Other One here. The energy out of Truckin' is strong but the prelude playing in The Other One is phenominal. Phil gets to stand tall while Jerry rings it out. They only do the second verse but then stop on a dime, the exact chord for Dew. Have played that 2:53 a hundred times on the car tape player! Two whoosh moments in less than 3:00 min! I live for this...go SF Giants.

This was my first show and my first "experience" as well. I never looked back. I remember standing outside before the show, and before dropping, feeling like I was amongst a group of like-minded, kind folks. Someone, like me, who wasn't prepared for the unseasonably cold and rainy weather struck me as very witty be singing "I'm goin' where the weather suits my clothes" (Hey, I was a newby, cut me some slack). I was really into it when the band opened with "Cold Rain And Snow". The crowd went nuts! My other vivid memory, other than all of the trails and visible sound, was the Terrapin in the second set. It was my favorite song at the time, and the one I had most hoped to hear. The entire experience came together for me when Jerry launched into the "Inspiration" line, and the pure white spots all hit him, sparkling off his guitar. Inspiration moved me, indeed. I've been a devout Deadhead and LSD enthusiast ever since. Thank you to the band, the fans, and Albert Hofmann!!!

I didn't watch the weather before going to the show. I was clueless when I walked out of the Spectrum on April 6th to see 4-6 inches of snow on the ground! The VW microbus I hitched a ride in needed to be pushed up the ramp by all the riders as we got off route 76 onto route 202 South.
Just a bit of background. ;)

I only had the second set and cannot comment intelligently on set I but can say with complete conviction this is one of the best shows of the 80's they played - shakedown is unquestionably one of the best along with syracuse in '84 and merriweather '85 -
this is a classic high energy east coast show lost>sailor rips as does the terrapin you can see the colors of the stage changing while you listen to the ripping (only 1 verse) other one and dew - this is the reason why they love the east coast so much and the spectrum in particular - listen to phil's bombs and how this taper is desperately try to adjust the levels accordingly - mine was hopelessly distorted the taper prob just gave up to dance.....

The first Terrapin Station I happened upon when first discovering the Dead and still my favourite to this day! The Shakedown>lost sailor>st. of circumstance>terrapin station is just divine...crystal clear...2nd set is one of my favourites for throwing on when company comes 'round. 1st set is worth downloading for the fired up and charging Cold Rain & Snow Alone...highly recommended this one!

i had the tape, it rocked me for years, the whole second set explodes, and then the weird whistle out of space into truckin where bobby is singin about a sex change is weir'd>then into short verse of the other one...the morning dew, just a delicious lead guitar from jerry, and phil just bombing like rumsfeld over iraq, it is totally sick

... for that one, see 5/23/82. This is a good show, particularly the second set. Nothing to get overly excited about, though. The most consistent stretch of '82 is 7/28 - 8/6. Imo.
